Re: Meeting place:
Consensus was that first order of business, before anything else can be done, is to secure a regular meeting place. Patricia, from Knit Wits at Covenant Woods, has supplied us with the name & number of the new person in charge of recreation. Elaine B. will phone to see if we can resume there. [So far, no go. Recreation dept. mailbox is full and cannot accept any more messages. Will keep trying.] If not, back-up reservation at the Atlee Library has been made for July. In June we can reserve library space for Aug. if need be.
Re: Picnic
We decided it was important to 1. keep things simple, and 2. support a local business, so we will order box lunches from Homemade by Suzanne.
Members will need to notify Elaine B. of their choice of lunch, [click the above link to see the menu.] Please, please, please keep it simple by choosing what is offered and not customizing. I will pay for all of it with my credit card and have Door Dash deliver for a nominal charge. We will determine what each should pay by dividing the total by number of lunches. Please bring cash. Depending on which box is ordered, some may pay a few cents more than others, but remember, we are trying to keep it simple.
Suzanne's needs a week lead time, so placing your order with me before June 12 is imperative, or we won't be able to guarantee you a box. The Guild will provide bottled water, paper goods, etc. but if you want anything else to drink, please BYOBeverage. Of course, you are most welcome to bring your own bag lunch. Nothing will be pot luck style for sanitation reasons.
Re: Treasury
Our treasury is healthy, roughly $2000. Since covid interrupted our calendar for 2020, to avoid confusion about who paid dues for 2020 and who didn't, we will not collect dues for 2021, and so get a fresh start with all the record keeping in 2022.
Re: Increasing membership
Several ideas were tossed into the discussion. The one most preferred was that we create a brochure that can be left at places like libraries. We need a member with skill at creating such a brochure to step up and volunteer. Photos from this web site can be used. We must be mindful not to violate any copyright laws by getting photos from other sources. We have the funds in our treasury to have them professionally printed. A local print shop, "We Think in Ink", in Ashland was recommended.
We also will look into posting notice of our meetings in Style magazine or The Mechanicsville Local. If that comes at a price, that idea may need to be a one time thing or shelved altogether. Further discussion to ensue. Again, this idea requires that we have a regular meeting place.
Another idea was that we plan something special for an upcoming program this fall, advertising it heavily, to attract new members. That idea has some traction once we are assured of a regular meeting place.
Re: Charity work
We'll get back to this topic once we have settled on a regular meeting place. Hopefully by early fall. Keeping it all simple here, as we are not working with a full membership showing at meetings yet.
Re: New president needed.
We thank Mary for taking on the president's role more than once in her tenure of membership. So, it's time to pass that baton on to another. Please click this link back to our 3-16-19 meeting for clarification of the responsibilities for each office, and consider if it's time for you to step up and take on this role in our guild for at least one year.
SHOW 'n TELL
- Lydia: I am sure that during this time of covid, you have been thinking of Lydia and praying she stays well. Well, I am happy to report that she is great and glad to get back to our meetings. She didn't have a project in hand at the beginning of the meeting but, no surprise in this, by the time if was her turn to share, she had about 7" of a white afghan square already completed! It's so nice that some things are back to normal! lol
- Maria: On her needles, Maria had an almost completed "onsie" for her new, first granddaughter! Congratulation! The garment is in all stockinette stitch in pastel rainbow colors, graduating from one color to the next. So pretty! We'll all enjoy seeing a photo of her....wearing it! hint, hint! :-)
- Deb B. filled us in on her health scare in 2020. She had a brain aneurysm requiring 2 surgeries to repair!!! Not surprising she needed physical therapy to regain use of some of her limbs....hands in particular!!! Thankfully she is all well now and back to crafting. She was working on a crocheted zigzag stitch afghan. I was so stunned by her health news that I forgot to note the color of her blanket. Perhaps we'll see it completed at an upcoming meeting.
- Jennifer is working on a wide striped, crocheted afghan in shades of sunny yellow and cream.
- Becky is working on a sweater in heathery, wheat tones with dark spots. She also showed us a creamy colored, finished, cotton, "big people" shawl to which she added pockets at the ends. Such a great idea!
- Suzanne Th. is working on wheelchair wraps for charity. They are a round shoulder drape that won't interfere with maneuvering the wheel chair. It's made in gender neutral black, grey, and red.
- Susan was balling up skeins of brown yarn that will eventually become a sweater.
- Elaine B. is working on a white, rectangular, baby blanket in a basket weave pattern. The fiber is #1 fingering gauge where working 10 rows only advances the size one inch! It wasn't ready for the baby shower, but I promised it will be finished before baby come!
So that's it for this month. I expect it may take us a few months to get back into the normal swing of things. Corky and Marie are not planning to rejoin us until fall, out of an abundance of caution, since, Bill, Corky's husband and Marie's brother, has serious immunity issues. We'll certainly keep them all in our thoughts and look forward to seeing them in a few months. ...along with whatever new colorways Martha has been cooking up! :-)
