Meeting 3-16-19 14 Attending, 3 Newcomers :-)
Donated items: 11 washcloths, 3 hats, 11 stuffed toys
We would like to extend our heartfelt welcome to new members:
Betty, an experienced knitter from the Tuesday Library group.
Brenda, introduced to our group by Corky, with whom she participates in a church knitting circle.
María V-H, introduced to our group by Martha, with whom she works.
Old News:
The Gloucester Retreat was nicely attended and well represented by our guild. They were able to raise even more money for their animal shelter charity than last year. Kudos to all! As usual the food was ample and we all indulged to our hearts content. This year they handled the door prize drawings differently, which made that part move more quickly than in previous years. They had a brown bag located next to each prize. After purchasing tickets, one dropped the tickets into the bag for the desired prize, so any winner only got what they liked. It worked out very well. Our own Deb T. was a big winner, and her smile was even bigger each time her name was called, though she graciously passed on some of her prizes to others.
REMINDER: The Powhatan Fiber Festival is next month, Saturday, April 27, 2019 - (Rain or Shine), 10:00am - 5:00pm
at the Powhatan Rescue Squad Grounds 3920 Marion Harland Ln, Powhatan, Virginia 23139. Admission - $5.00 / Children 12 and under free. Carpooling might be a good idea, those offering to drive can let me know and I'll broadcast that info via email. Individuals can then make their own arrangements using the email/phone contacts on the recently distributed 2019 Membership list.
A side note regarding the Fiber Fest. We discussed the possibility of our next knit-along project, the Great North American Afghan, one of which we could make by each of us preparing just one or two squares. Whoever volunteers to sew the whole thing together need not prepare a square. Then we could raffle it off at the 2020 or 2021 Powhatan Fiber Fest and use the funds to support our charities.
New Business:
This was a very productive meeting, as we have restructured our leadership and have begun plans anew for a exciting and full year!
New President: Mary
New Vice President: Martha
Continuing as Treasurer: Susan, to whom we extend a great "Thank You!" for maintaining this position for over 10 years!!!!!
Continuing as Secretary: Elaine B.
New Program Committee: Corky [Chair], Jennifer W., María N.
Continuing as Charity Coordinator: Elaine K.
We have also delineated the tasks inherent with each position of the leadership team:
President will preside over meetings; coordinate info to be shared; and accept treasurer reports, project/activity progress reports, charity reports, and remind all of upcoming events.
Vice President will preside over any meeting in the absence of the President, and perform all of the above activities that the President would have done. She will also provide support to the Program Committee as needed.
Treasurer will accept dues; pay bills; and maintain and report on financial records.
Secretary will facilitate email or snail mail communication as directed by the President; maintain the webpage; keep attendance and charity donation records; and report on both via the web page, as well as verbally at meetings.
Charity Coordinator will collect and deliver all items designated for the charities we support.
Program Committee will plan and implement programs suggested/requested by membership. The Chair of the committee will keep the leadership team informed of the progress and details of planned activities, especially those incurring expenses. For the most part, alternate meetings will be sit 'n knit at the church, unless special events/programs necessitate special dates. The "Coming Events" page of this website will provide any advanced information available about each meeting date. Members of the committee will often meet for a half hour or so prior to regularly scheduled meetings to coordinate information. The keeper-of-the-key to the church will need to be kept informed of plans for advanced meetings for this committee.
Further information:
Elaine K. will prepare a write up of each of the charities we currently/historically have been supporting. It has been suggested that we narrow our focus so that we can support more fully those charities we decide to continue to support. To that end, after we decide which to continue to support, Elaine will check with them to see if there have been any changes in their needs and report back to us. She will also then prepare a listing to keep us informed of the specific needs of each group and when collections will be made. This information will be available, in future, on our web page. So next month, members are asked to come prepared with any new charities to suggest for support and please include the contact information for that charity.
UPDATE on our field trip to the Yarn Club in VA Beach. Since our April meeting date conflicts with Easter weekend, and the prior weekend conflicts with Palm Sunday, it has been decided that we'll move that field trip to another month. Corky spoke with the management of the Yarn Club, who is enthusiastic about our future visit. She even has suggestions for places to have lunch! Stay tuned for future updates via our "Coming Events" page.
Show 'N Tell:
Jennifer W., Brenda, and Elaine B., came prepared to begin our Building With Lace project, so had nothing new to show, though Jennifer and Elaine are still working on their ongoing projects.
Marie modeled her multicolored triangle scarf, whose predominant colors are shades of yellow and brown. Of course, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, both she and Corky sported elegant green jewelry handmade by Marie.
Corky has been diligently and prodigiously knitting baby clothes for her church's Crisis Pregnancy Center. She had finished some tiny blue hats and a sweet white and pink flecked raglan sweater, her first raglan, with a matching hat. The hat was finished with an adorable knot on top made by i-cord. She also told us about a website containing a calculator to help a knitter know where to place increases when a pattern has the dreaded direction to "increase evenly across the row." She'll get that info to me and I'll add it to our HELP! page.
Lydia has been working on a multi-colored scarf that she reserves to work on just at our meetins. It is currently quite well along. She gets quite a bit done at our meetins!
María N., in an effort to learn to knit mitered squares, has thoroughly mastered that skill by creating an afghan in brown with alternate squares having alternate rows in either tan or cream. Very impressive!!!!! When it's finished, we'll need to get a photo of it to add to our gallery!
María V-H. had brought along a collection of hats that she had made to offer for a charity.
Martha showed us the stuffed animals she had dressed in delightful cardigan sweaters. Our First Responders will certainly put them to good use. Elaine K. shared that her son, who works volunteer rescue, told her how important those toys are, as often the children will tell the details of the sad events to the toy, when they wouldn't speak to an adult. Martha also showed us her latest dyed yarns for sale. So beautiful!
Next month, we'll have an updated listing of coming events. so than that page on this website is weill be updated as well. Stay tuned for sneak previews of coming attractions! lol
