Old Business:
Becky received "thank-you" notes from both the Sheriff's office for the dressed stuffed animals, and the Christian Village, who receives the washcloths made by members. She passed them around for us to read. It was clear that our donations are greatly appreciated. Becky even got a tour of the new police department!
Next Saturday, April 27th, is the Powhatan Fiber Festival.
Members can drive straight there, or meet at the church at 9:45 a.m. to sort out ride sharing. Cars will pull out as they are loaded, so don't be late if you hope to catch a ride. There is no guarantee that there will be enough drivers to accommodate all those wishing to ride, so arrive with your own gas tank full. As we had discussed at the March meeting, we can gather as a group once at the Festival site, then figure out what to do and where to go from there. The group will gather just inside the entry gate where the tickets are sold at 11:00 a.m.. Elaine B. has room for 2 more riders. FYI, Elaine plans to leave the festival at about 3:00-3:30 that afternoon, with arrival back at the church probably an hour later.
Since Sat. April 27th is also "Local Yarn Store Day" we mused about whether or not our local shops would be represented at the Powhatan festival. Only time will tell on that question.
- Discussion followed about ways to encourage new members. Several ideas were put forth and are being explored, including co-sponsoring a presenter for a workshop open to the [paying] public with one of our local yarn shops; putting our meeting info into the calendar section of local newspapers; manning a table at the Fall Fellowship Festival sponsored by the Sheriff's department up at the Courthouse; manning a table at the State Fair. We could also post a notice at each of the county libraries.
In addition, June 8th is "International Knit in Public" day. It was suggested that a group could gather to knit at one of the local Capital One Cafés, one being at 2933 Cary Street, as well as one in Short Pump. A community room needs to be booked in advance, so we need to know at the May meeting if we have members who wish to participate at Cap 1. Ashland Coffee & Tea was another suggested location. There's no reason we can't do more than one public place. Stay tuned for more info about these two locations for this event.
Note of interest: There is the possibility that Center of the Yarniverse will charter a bus to carry knitters to the Maryland Fiber Festival 2020. It was suggested that perhaps for 2020, or later, we could do the same in conjunction with another knitting guild. We could also reach out to former members of our guild to join us.
New Business:
In lieu of a May meeting, on May 18th we will participate in the Yarn Crawl that runs from May 17-27th. Participating yarn shops will have events and possibly special deals for crawl participants. Shops are: Center of the Yarnverse, Ashland; Dances with Wool, Midlothian; Yarn Club, VA Beach; Baa Baa Sheep, Norfolk; and both of Williamsburg, Flying Needles, and Yarn Matters. We will meet at the church at 9:45 to sort our ride sharing. Elaine B. will drive and has room for 4 riders; email her to make a reservation in the CiaoMobile. As with carpooling to Powhatan Fiber Fest, cars will pull out as they are loaded, so don't be late if you hope to catch a ride. There is no guarantee that there will be enough drivers to accommodate all those wishing to ride, so arrive with your own gas tank full. We will visit Yarn Club in VA Beach, then Baa Baa Sheep in Norfolk, as time allows, we will stop at one of the Williamsburg shops on the way home. Our thinking was that by visiting the further shops together in one day, members could then visit the more local ones on their own later during the crawl, and possibly complete the entire circuit.
June picnic: The date will NOT be our usual meeting date, but the following Saturday, June 22.
Martha has graciously offered her home for our picnic. The address will come to you via email, but it is on our member list if you have one. If not, let me know and I'll email it to you. Lunch will be the usual covered dish. Closer to the date, I will email a list of who is bringing what so we won't end up with too many potato chips and nothing nutritious. lol. We'll be using up our acquired collection of paper goods and plastic ware so expect to see some Christmas designs. If everyone brings a bottle of some beverage, then we'll have plenty to wash down our lunch. Bring along any project you've not yet shown us at "Show n Tell," as well as your Michelle Hunter knit-along shawl. We can continue to work on them, as well as be tortured to see the progress of those ahead of us in the project.
The Martha and Maria V-H Yarn Dyeing Workshop: status update
You've already gotten, via email, some info about placing an order for the yarn with Martha. Please note the deadline on that is rapidly approaching, April 28th. We haven't yet received confirmation from the church for the use of their facility for a longer stretch of time. Though it won't be as long as a workday, it will probably go well into the afternoon, as the product needs time to dry out. How to deal with lunch hasn't yet been decided. We could each brown bag it, or we could do pot luck. We can get a final vote on that at the June picnic. Our presenters will provide all the "cooking" equipment needed, but each participant will need to bring their own dyeing medium, Kool-aid or Easter egg dye. Probably craft stores and discount places will continue to carry that material until it's all sold out, maybe even at cut prices! For the sake of organization, we would like to know how many folks will be participating, so please come to the June picnic with a decision as to whether or not you'll be playing in puddles of color. Personally, I don't plan to dye, but not for anything would I miss the fun of watching others do it! lol Then, of course, there's always the incentive to come if we plan a potluck! Yum! One last thing, while each participant will certainly clean up her own area, we probably will need a few sets of hands to clean up in general. I'm volunteering mine, who will join me? Let Jennifer W. know who to expect to leave the church in the same condition we started with.
Show 'n Tell:
- Jennifer W. is working on a beautiful blue and white slip stitch baby blanket. The blue forms the diagonal lines of a grid and the white fills
in the center. The pattern is free on Ravelry, designed by Purl Soho, and called Mosaic. Check it out! It's a winner for sure!!!
- Susan S. is making herself a pair of socks in the classically beautiful color, camel.
- Elaine B. is still working on her Irish knit sweater, teddy bear sweaters, and also the Michelle Hunter struggle-along shawl in pale grey!
- Becky modeled her triangle shawlette with fiber from Blue Heron, autumn shades of red. This design cleverly has two big buttonholes that
you thread the opposite point of the triangle through, so no shawl pin is needed.
- Jeri was able to join us but her obstinate fingers have not yet been ready to start knitting again. Hopefully soon.
- Suzanne T. modeled her triangle shawlette in shades of red, rust, and cinnamon. Now she's working on a cowl in fine weight linen yarn
requiring size 2 needles! This project, in a shimmery, silvery beige will be perfect for wearing in warm, summer weather.
Stay tuned here for updates on our current events, links will also be on our "Coming Events" page, and more immediate info will come via email. Happy Spring, y'all!
