Party Business:
First a big "THANK YOU" to Renée for hosting our celebration. What a feast we had! It was so interesting to observe, that with each of us bringing a dish, and no prior planning of who brought what, we had a perfect and plentiful balance of fruit, veg, protein, starch, chocolate, and of course sugar, for a bountifully balanced meal. Note: Chocolate is it's own food group! With the number of requests for recipes overheard, perhaps we might consider creating our own recipe book! ... Now there's a thought!
The ornament swap certainly added a fun and festive touch to our festivities. There was a mixture of handmade and store-bought decorations, and it was evident that each choice was carefully thought out and chosen. This is definitely a very enjoyable tradition for our group...already can't wait for next year. Twelve months to be thinking about what to bring, hmmm!
Can't possibly move on to the next topic without mentioning the Elf, who was definitely not on any shelf! Be sure to check the photos at the end of the page! lol
Old Business:
Treasurer's report: We have a bit over $2240 in treasury. This is after paying our room-use donation to the church to the end of this year. The plan is to send them a check quarterly, or semi-annually. We are awaiting their preference on that, for next year. See our "Coming Events 2017" page for some of the guests presenters who will be teaching us in coming months, with their honorarium paid by our treasury.
Charity Chair report: Since this past July, when records began to be kept, through November, we have volunteered a total of 373 hours. Kudos to us for this substantial achievement! Next year, better records will be kept on the number of items donated, and to whom. Elaine K. took 49 hats of various sizes, 2 scarves, and a baby blanket to Hanover Safe House. Becky took a large number of washcloths to Hanover Village. All the items were most gratefully received. A suggestion has been made that a small group, representing our guild, go together to offer our donations. Since we are planning a toy-making project, in 2017, bringing the resulting products to a children's hospital around next Christimas is our goal.
Also, please note: we are moving the due date for personal toiletry donations, for Hanover Safe House, to our January meeting. Donations of full-sized items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, body lotion, soap, etc. and feminine products are truly appreciated by these women suffering personal trauma, usually involving violence.
Update on Gloucester Guild Retreat: This will be held, Jan. 28th, from roughly 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is a $5 donation for their charity, the Gloucester Humane Society; and a covered dish. The location is the same as in recent years: Beaverdam Park, 8687 Roaring Springs Rd, Gloucester Courthouse, VA 23061. [Click here for Google map]. This is a really, really good time! The Gloucester group are such fun people! There will be vendors. At this point we are expecting to see Dirt Woman, from Whitestone; and The Wren's Daughter, who will bring more of her amazing, hand-died yarn. Keep your fingers crossed that there may be even more vendors. It must be said... we will all miss The Knitting Sisters, from Williamsburg, who have retired. Sigh! Car-pooling for this event is highly recommended, not only because of the gas usage factor for the long-ish ride, but because the parking lot is limited.
New Business:
A big, "Thank-you!" goes out to Mary for making each member a name tag, with our own Hanover Knitting Guild logo on it. Mary will take each tag home, each meeting, and bring them back for use at each subsequent meeting, so they don't get lost. Be sure to pick up and then turn in your name tag at each meeting. :-)
We have an exciting opportunity! A field trip to an exclusive 'moving sale' . The owner of "Got Yarn", an online-only vendor, is moving from her current location in the downtown Richmond, John Marshall Building. Just for us, she is hosting a sale, January 7th at 10:30. We expect some really great bargains to be available. She does, however, need to know how many folks to expect. So, if you are planning to attend, please contact Renée, a.s.a.p. Space is an issue......probably, so is parking! Car-pooling anyone??? Stay tuned to this page for any updates on this event.
Another very valuable opportunity, valuable as in, life-saving! We are currently in the process of arranging a group to learn CPR, AED, and some basic First Aid, which hopefully will include Heimlich. The teacher is a highly reputed expert, who provides training to our local first responders. It is to be held Wed. April 19th, through Hanover Parks and Rec, a 3 hour training, for $35, to be held, most probably, at the Ashcake Rescue Squad building.....our old stomping grounds. :-)
Like swimming, these are vital skills that we all need to learn, as we never know, when the need will arise, and we are the only ones available to help! Contact Renée if you plan to attend. Check back to this page for updates on the start time.
Our 2017 program calendar, while still somewhat tentative, is taking shape. Please check the "2017 Coming Events" page for details.
Show 'n Tell:
-Deb B. has finished the cowl she made from the cream colored yarn she won at last year's Gloucester Retreat. Beautifully done, and...just in
time for cold, wintery days!
-Jennifer showed us an absolutely gorgeous scarf she made as a gift for her mom. Done in a rich claret color, the lacy pattern is called Sierra.
Sorry I didn't get a picture. Mea culpa! ....will try to track one down. Stay tuned.
-Corky has shown us that her skill levels are increasing at a breakneck pace. She made a pink and milk-chocolate, brown entrelac hat!!!!! So
very impressive! It is an outstanding inspiration for us, as we look forward to a program on entrelac in 2017!
-Elaine B. is finally finished knitting family Christmas gifts, and is working a shawlette for herself in ombre shades of blues and greens...to be
modeled at our Jan. '17 meeting!
-Gene is trying out, on some socks, the new, V-shaped double-pointed needles by Neke. His evaluation so far, is that it takes some getting used
to, but they seem okay. We look forward to another review on them after he finishes his current project.
